The police in Johor Baru have confirmed that they are investigating the president of PAS, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, for questioning the authorisation of the Pardons Board. The statement was made during a ceramah (public lecture) at the PAS Bakri division headquarters on Saturday, 26th of August.
The Johor police chief, Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat, stated that Abdul Hadi is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or three years imprisonment, or both if convicted.
The police chief also highlighted the importance of refraining from discussing sensitive topics such as royalty, religion, and race, emphasizing that public safety and order should be maintained. He added that actions will be taken against anyone, regardless of their political affiliation, if they touch on these matters. This statement was made in a release on Monday, 28th of August.
According to reports, Abdul Hadi allegedly questioned the authorisation of the Pardons Board during a ceramah held in conjunction with the Simpang Jeram by-election. He stated that in Islam, only the victims could pardon and forgive the accuser, not the Pardons Board, which includes the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (the King), the Prime Minister, and the Attorney General as its members. Abdul Hadi further explained that in Islam, the accuser must seek forgiveness from the victim or, if the victim has passed away, from their parents, siblings, or next of kin.
The investigation comes as a result of Abdul Hadi’s comments, wherein he questioned the legitimacy of the Pardons Board’s authority according to Islamic principles.
