JEMPOL: A couple has been apprehended by the police on suspicions of mistreating a six-year-old boy in Bahau, located near here.
As stated by District police chief Supt Hoo Chang Hook, the individuals, identified as the victim’s father and stepmother, were taken into custody on September 12. They have also been detained for a period of seven days.
Supt Hoo revealed, “We have received credible information from a member of the public who reported that a young boy had escaped from his home, prompting us to conduct an investigation.”
He added, “The police eventually managed to locate the child, who exhibited visible injuries on his body. Subsequently, he was immediately taken to Jempol Hospital for medical treatment.”
A medical examination conducted on the victim revealed multiple scars and previous injuries. Preliminary investigations have indicated that the abuse started in March.
“Besides being physically assaulted, the couple also employed a cane and a wooden ladle to hit the child,” Supt Hoo disclosed.
He further mentioned that the victim has since been transferred to Kuala Pilah Hospital for further medical attention.
The boy’s father, aged 27, worked at a sawmill, while his stepmother was a housewife, according to Supt Hoo. The child is the eldest among four siblings and appears to be the only one subjected to mistreatment.
Investigations on the case are presently being conducted under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which stipulates a potential punishment of a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both upon conviction.
