KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities in Bukit Aman have discovered a new scam technique where scammers send emails to individuals, falsely claiming that they have an outstanding traffic summons. The email also includes a link for the recipient to “pay your fine” and advises them to address the issue promptly to avoid further legal action. The Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) of Bukit Aman has been notified of this circulating email, according to its director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf.
Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf warned the public against engaging with or responding to these messages, as the police force never issues such notices. He stated that, as far as the police are concerned, the notice of payment is the summons itself. When contacted on Tuesday (Sept 5), he emphasized that the police have no intention of introducing additional methods to demand the settlement of summonses, explaining that it would be illogical and costly to print or send such demands online.
Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf urged caution when opening emails containing unverified links, as scammers can utilize these links for phishing scams. He clarified that these scams aim to deceive users into revealing personal and sensitive information like passwords and banking details, or trick them into downloading malware, thereby exposing themselves to cybercrime.
The email observed by The Star bears the police logo letterhead and states the following:
“We would like to draw your attention once again to a recent traffic offence. Our internal compliance department has noted that you have violated the rule governing the use of common areas, and we observe that your fine has still not been paid. This contradicts the principles set out in policy (no.5874-247), which was put in place to preserve a harmonious community environment. It is imperative to stress the pressing need to regularize this fine as quickly as possible. Failure to do so could result in serious legal repercussions, including the possibility of prosecution. We, therefore, urge you to handle this situation with the utmost care, to avoid any further legal complications. It is crucial to emphasize that you are obliged to comply with all legal obligations concerning infringements and sanctions. We stress the importance of resolving this situation immediately to avoid any further punitive action.”
The email also contains an attached link for users to make payment for the alleged “fine”.
