Police in Johor Bahru have received three reports of investment fraud and phone scams over the past two days, resulting in a total loss of more than RM1.41 million. The victims, two women and one man, aged between 36 and 46, have come forward to lodge the reports. The first case involves a woman who lost RM637,163.55 after falling victim to promises of an 11% profit on her investment within a week.
The second case is that of a man who made 19 cash transactions to 16 different accounts, amounting to RM451,887. He fell for a cryptocurrency investment scheme on the ‘Yomaex Crypto Market’ website. Lastly, a 46-year-old woman received a suspicious package from Pos Laju and was instructed to make a payment. She carried out 15 transactions totaling RM322,270 to 11 different bank accounts.
Johor police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat stated in a press release on Friday (Oct 6) that the cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. He urged the public to exercise caution and adopt preventive measures, especially when engaging in financial transactions. The Commercial Crime Investigation Department’s social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, provide updated information.
In order to block transactions made by scammers, the public is encouraged to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997. Taking this initial step can help prevent further loss. – Bernama
