SUNGAI PETANI: Police in Sungai Petani have apprehended a married couple and confiscated 51 slabs of compressed dried leaves believed to be cannabis in a raid on a residence in Bandar Seri Astana. The seized drugs weigh around 51.6kg and are valued at approximately RM160,000. The operation, carried out by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department of the Penang Police Headquarters, took place at 12:30 am on Monday, August 28th. Kuala Muda District Police chief ACP Zaidy Che Hassan disclosed that both suspects, aged 32, were taken into custody during the raid.
According to ACP Zaidy, it is alleged that the male suspect had recently collected the drug supply from Kelantan and stopped at the house to rest before proceeding to distribute the drugs in the northern Perak areas. One slab of dried compressed leaves, suspected to be cannabis, was discovered in the residence. Furthermore, 50 additional slabs were found in a Honda Jazz car, believed to have been used by the suspect for collecting and distributing the drugs. The arrested man is employed in a factory and is allegedly a transporter. He receives payment for collecting drug supplies from a neighboring nation and then distributes them to bordering states based on demand.
The payment for delivering each slab of compressed drugs is reportedly around RM100. Initial investigations indicate that the suspect has been involved in drug trafficking since April and had already made three deliveries before being apprehended. During the raid, the police also found the couple’s one-year-old daughter in the house. Additionally, a motorcycle was seized as part of the investigation. The male suspect, who possesses two narcotics and two criminal records, tested positive for drugs.
Following their arrest, both suspects have been detained under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code for a period of one week until September 3rd. The case is being investigated under Sections 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. ACP Zaidy mentioned that the drugs confiscated could have potentially supplied up to 103,270 drug addicts. He urged individuals with information regarding drug trafficking or drug abuse activities to report their findings to 012-2087222. – Bernama
