KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah announced that emoluments for police officers are currently undergoing a review within the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA). This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to reform the civil service and fulfill the aspirations of Malaysia Madani development.
During Oral Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) raised concerns about the need for improved salaries for police officers. Shamsul acknowledged that the current salaries and allowances for police personnel, particularly those residing in urban areas, are insufficient.
Presently, allowances are determined based on the officers’ residential location, ranging between RM200 and RM350. Recognizing the inadequacy of these rates in light of the escalating cost of living in major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru, the Ministry has urged the Public Service Department to conduct a thorough review.
Shamsul also noted that the base salary of police officers is subject to regular evaluations and adjustments. Emoluments, including base salary, fixed remuneration, and additional allowances are awarded based on job responsibilities, expertise, and risk factors, surpassing the minimum wage of RM1,500.
For instance, a YA1 Constable currently receives a base salary of RM1,441, along with RM300 for fixed housing allowance, RM115 for fixed public service allowance, RM350 for subsistence allowance, and RM200 for service incentive payment, totaling a gross salary of RM2,406. Annual increments for the YA1 grade amount to RM105.
It is worth mentioning that the total gross salary excludes supplementary allowances linked to specific assignments and placements within the force.
