Police in Johor Baru are currently investigating a fake bomb threat made to a shopping mall and hotel in the area. The management of the mall and hotel reported receiving a phone call on Saturday evening from a foreign man claiming to have placed a bomb in the vicinity.
Upon receiving the report, the police immediately dispatched 92 officers and policemen to the location along with two K-9 units to conduct investigations. The Fire and Rescue Department also joined the investigations with three officers and 20 personnel.
By 11:30pm, thorough checks had been conducted at both locations, and no suspicious objects were found. The mall and hotel were declared safe to resume normal operations. Comm Kamarul Zaman stated that police would remain at the location for further surveillance, and no casualties had been reported thus far.
The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code, which addresses criminal intimidation by anonymous communication. If convicted, the perpetrator could face imprisonment for up to seven years.
Comm Kamarul Zaman urged the public not to engage in speculation that could cause distress. Prior to the police’s arrival, videos were uploaded on social media showing a large group of people being evacuated from the mall.
