KLANG: A Malaysian woman and her husband have been accused of supplying weapons to an Israeli national and were charged separately at the Sessions Court in front of judge Sharifah Hascindie Syed Omar. Sharifah Faraha Syed Husin, 41, was charged under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act, while her spouse Abdul Azim Mohd Yasin, 43, was charged under Section 9.

Sharifah Faraha was charged with possessing a Luger pistol CZ 75 P-01 CAL.9 with the serial number A216210, while Abdul Azim was charged with being aware that she had the weapon with her. Both accused pleaded not guilty, and if convicted, they face a jail term of up to 14 years and a whipping of not fewer than six times.

Deputy public prosecutors Mohammad Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Salim and Fazeedah Faik prosecuted the case, and as the offences weren’t bailable, the accused were sent back to police custody.

The couple was accused of committing the offence at a house on Jalan Haji Omar, Kampung Bukit Belimbing, Kuala Selangor, on March 29, and were detained by police at a Ramadan bazaar in the same area on the same day.

An Israeli national, Shalom Avitan, was arrested in Ampang two days earlier and found with six guns and 200 bullets. Earlier reports suggested that Sharifah Faraha and Abdul Azim were suspected of supplying the weapons to Avitan, who entered Malaysia on a French passport but handed over his Israeli passport to the police upon detention.

Avitan’s arsenal included a Sig Sauer, two Glocks, and a Smith & Wesson, and although he is suspected of being a spy, he claimed to be in Malaysia to resolve a family dispute with another Israeli.

Reports in Hebrew-language news outlets indicated that Avitan was involved in organized crime and tasked with eliminating a rival from another crime family who had entered Malaysia, as the two families had been engaged in a feud for months.

The Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, stated that Avitan is expected to face charges after the festive season, as investigations into his motives for possessing the firearms are ongoing.

He added that the police are continuing to gather more information in the case.
