A husband-and-wife pair of moneylenders in Sibu has been sentenced to death by the High Court for the murder of a woman. Justice Christopher Chin Soo Yin ruled that the couple had a common intention to kill the victim because she was unable to earn enough money for them.

In addition to the death sentence, the court also found that there was a strong case against Seow Pei Chee and Cheung Chia Ming, both 41, who reside in Subang Jaya and Kuala Lumpur respectively.

Justice Chin expressed shock at the facts of the case, stating that the couple had subjected the victim and her teenage daughter to years of torture, fear, and physical abuse. The couple lived off the victim’s earnings as a prostitute and when she couldn’t earn enough, they became violent towards her. Justice Chin also revealed that they were willing to exploit the victim’s daughter for personal gain as moneylenders.

Based on the nature of the case, Justice Chin had no choice but to impose the death sentence in accordance with the amended Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. The victim died from severe head and bodily injuries inflicted by both accused.

Seow and Cheung were jointly charged with killing the 38-year-old victim between October 4 and October 6, 2020 at a house in Jalan Tong Sang. They then disposed of the body in Jalan Aman. The victim’s body, which was found stuffed in a suitcase, was discovered by a passer-by on October 6, 2020 at approximately 6:30 am.

The defendants were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
