The Attorney General’s Chambers has explained that the decision to apply for Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s discharge, but not acquittal, was based on accepted arguments by the court. In response to criticism of its move, the AGC stated in a two-paragraph statement that the High Court Judge found the prosecution’s arguments to be cogent.
Ahmad Zahid was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on 47 graft charges by the High Court on Monday. These charges were brought against him by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission regarding the alleged misuse of funds from his charitable foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB).
The prosecution made this application in order to conduct further investigation into the case. Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar listed 11 reasons for this, including preventing any potential miscarriage of justice and allowing for more comprehensive investigations by relevant authorities.
