PETALING JAYA: The memories of serving on the frontlines during the Covid-19 pandemic are still vivid for medical workers in Malaysia, even four years after the virus first emerged in the country. Dr Sean Thum recalled being called to duty just five days before the movement control order (MCO) was put in place on March 18, 2020. He felt a strong sense of responsibility and duty, despite initial concerns about the situation. Dr Thum mentioned that he had received training for such scenarios in medical school, which helped prepare him for the challenges ahead.

Dr Thum, who served in Johor and Sabah during the pandemic, highlighted the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) faced by medical staff at the time. He mentioned that doctors had to resort to making their own PPE due to the lack of supplies. Despite the challenges, Dr Thum emphasized the determination of healthcare workers to continue providing care to patients, even in difficult circumstances.

Reflecting on the uncertainties and anxieties experienced while working on the frontlines, Dr Thum acknowledged the collective stress felt by the entire nation during the early days of the pandemic. However, he also noted the sense of camaraderie and patriotism among healthcare workers, who were united in their commitment to serving the people. Looking back, Dr Thum described the period as extremely challenging but recognized the progress made in managing the situation since then.

Dr Thum commented on the current state of public health in Malaysia, noting the increased focus and funding allocated to the Health Ministry. He observed greater public awareness of health measures, such as mask-wearing, even when not compulsory. However, he also highlighted the need for improved welfare for healthcare workers to retain talented professionals in the country. Dr Thum emphasized the importance of ongoing improvements in the healthcare system to better prepare for future challenges.

Another healthcare worker, referred to as Dr Amy, shared her experiences from serving at a quarantine and treatment center during the pandemic. She likened the conditions to a war zone, with dwindling oxygen supplies and growing patient numbers. Dr Amy recalled the struggles faced by medical staff, including shortages of resources and manpower, as they worked tirelessly to care for patients. Despite the difficulties, she expressed gratitude for having overcome those challenging times and emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences to strengthen the healthcare system.

Dr Amy reflected on the dedication and love for the country that motivated healthcare workers to persevere during the pandemic. She expressed hope for addressing and resolving issues within the healthcare system proactively, rather than waiting for another crisis to test its resilience. With a sense of optimism for the future, Dr Amy stressed the importance of continuous improvements in healthcare to ensure preparedness for any future challenges.
