PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has been informed that somebody intentionally locked the door from the outside of the burning room, where Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan’s body was discovered, in an effort to stage a crime scene. Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Amril Johari explained that the doorknob could not have been locked from the inside since the fire had not reached the door. Moreover, he stated that the doorknob was intentionally set on fire to create the impression that it had been locked by the fire, as there were only traces of soot on the door. “This was done to prepare a crime scene,” he added.

Mohd Amril presented his arguments during the prosecution’s appeal against the Shah Alam High Court’s decision to acquit Nazrin’s widow, Samirah, 48, and two teenagers, currently aged 20 and 17, of his murder. He also highlighted the findings of the second pathologist, Dr Prashant Naresh Samberkar, who identified post-mortem signs of hypostasis on the back of the body, indicating that it had been moved. “Additionally, blood spatter was found on the wall behind the bed, which was later confirmed to contain the deceased’s DNA. How could blood be on the wall when the body was on the floor?” he questioned. “The discovery of bloodstains indicates the impact of a blunt object, not a gunshot or explosion,” he further explained.

Another Deputy Public Prosecutor, Tengku Intan Suraya Tengku Ismail, argued that the injuries on the body did not match those caused by an explosion. “If there had been an explosion (from a mobile phone), the victim’s ear would have been torn off. However, ENT specialist Dr Zulkiflee Abu Bakar testified that Nazrin’s ears were intact,” she stated.

A panel of three judges, headed by Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera and accompanied by Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim and Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli, have scheduled the continuation of the submissions for October 17.

In June 2022, the Shah Alam High Court acquitted Samirah and the two teenagers after the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against them. The trio, along with Eka Wahyu Lestari, an Indonesian woman who is still at large, were charged with the murder of 45-year-old Nazrin at his home in Mutiara Damansara between 11:30 PM on June 13, 2018, and 4 AM the following day. – Bernama
