The Customs Department has made it clear that it will not protect any of its personnel who are involved in misconduct and corruption. In a statement released on Friday (March 29), the Customs Department acknowledged the arrest of 34 individuals by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The Department stated that it will fully cooperate with the MACC in their investigation. The fate of the implicated officers will be determined based on the findings of the MACC’s probe.
To combat corruption activities and leaks at the borders, the Customs Department is taking various measures. This includes enhancing import and export procedures, particularly in terms of manifest control and airway bills.
The Department has also committed to upholding compliance and good governance, while establishing a system of checks and balances. They are working on strengthening the integrity screening process for officers in high-risk customs areas involving import and export activities.
To tackle smuggling, the Customs Department is intensifying their enforcement operations. They are reviewing current practices, procedures, and work processes to identify and address vulnerabilities that could facilitate corruption. Additionally, they are seeking input and recommendations from the MACC Inspection and Consultation Division for necessary improvements.
The Customs Department emphasized their collaboration with the MACC in the fight against corruption. They are striving to work closely with the anti-corruption agency to uphold integrity and transparency within their operations.
