KULAI: Teo Nie Ching has announced that the Communications and Multimedia Act will undergo a review in order to better address cybercrime and challenges related to social media. The Deputy Communications and Digital Minister stated that the ministry is currently studying the Act and will present the findings in Parliament. The hope is to present the results by the end of this year or early next year. According to Ching, the Act, which was enacted in 1998, needs reviewing to ensure that its provisions are adequate to tackle the current cybercrimes. The ministry plans to engage with stakeholders on this matter and will also refer to similar laws in other countries such as Singapore.
Ching further expressed the ministry’s desire to hold social media platform providers accountable under the Act. She argued that they cannot simply claim to be providing a platform and should be more responsible for the content shared on their platforms. In response to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain’s suggestion to review laws related to cybercrime, Ching stated that her ministry is prepared to collaborate with the Home Ministry on this matter. While the review falls under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry, Ching emphasized her ministry’s readiness to provide their views if needed.
