Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid, who is the wife of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, will be taken to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court at 9am and be accused under Section 36 (2) of the MACC Act for failing to declare her assets. It is said she plans to contest the allegations in court following the charge.

According to court efiling system information, the trial will be held at Sessions Criminal Court 9 before Judge Azura Alwi.

Although the couple’s two sons were also questioned by graft investigators, it is understood that only Na’imah will be facing charges after being asked to appear before the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Jan 10.

She was called in to provide her statement to help identify the value of some high-value assets, both domestic and international, owned by their families’ companies regarding inquiries into the former finance minister.

Confirmation that Na’imah would be charged came from MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki when reached for comment.

In December, Menara Ilham, which is owned by the family, was seized by the MACC as part of its investigations.

The MACC previously stated that the investigation into Daim was based on existing laws and information from the Pandora Papers.

As part of the probe, Daim was served a notice on June 7, 2023, under Section 36 (1) (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

Following the seizure of Menara Ilham, Daim criticized the MACC’s investigation, alleging that it was a political witch-hunt motivated by the “animus” of the Prime Minister.

On Jan 10, Daim and his family applied for permission to start a judicial review of the MACC’s investigation. Daim and Na’imah named the MACC and public prosecutor as the first and second respondents, respectively.

Na’imah said she was told that she will be charged despite assuring them that she would provide a statement following her husband’s medical procedure. She requested for the charge to be postponed to the next day, which was refused. “They insisted I be charged (today). I will be in court and I will fight this charge,” she stated in a release issued yesterday evening.
