KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak expressed his concern during the first session of University Malaya’s 63rd convocation ceremony on Saturday (Nov 25). He said that he is troubled by the escalating disregard for courtesy and politeness, which has led to the open and unchecked use of offensive language, including vulgarity, slander, and insults.

According to the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, this lack of courtesy and manners is not only seen in the uneducated or those in lower positions, but also by educated individuals in high-ranking and titled positions. He highlighted that this behavior does not just occur on the streets or in markets, but also takes place on stages, prestigious venues, halls with dignified status, and sometimes even in places of worship.

Sultan Nazrin emphasized the importance of communication in Islam, urging individuals to choose their words wisely and speak with kindness. He stressed that it is crucial to treat others with respect, maintain order and uphold proper behavior, as it is in line with Islamic teachings.

He mentioned the dangers of allowing individuals, especially leaders, to engage in mutual criticism and insults, as it has the potential to ignite hatred and fuel animosity. Drawing lessons from the events of 1969, Sultan Nazrin called for immediate preventive measures to stop provocative voices that incite communal and religious discord.

He added that the fifth component of the Rukun Negara, “politeness and morality”, should be incorporated into educational programs, to ensure that these elements are understood, internalized, and practiced by the people. According to Sultan Nazrin, these values are the foundation for constructing a harmonious society and a prosperous nation.

The convocation which began on that day, will end on Dec 2, with a total of 8,327 graduates receiving their scrolls.
