PETALING JAYA: DAP should continue to exert pressure on the government to obtain an explanation regarding the discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) granted to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, according to a PAS leader.

PAS central working committee member Datuk Awang Hashim expressed the view that DAP should persistently push for answers on the DNAA given to the Deputy Prime Minister in the Yayasan Akalbudi case.

Awang Hashim pointed out that the corruption charges were leveled against the Umno president during the previous administration of Pakatan Harapan.

However, the DNAA was granted when Pakatan Harapan was part of a unity government with Barisan Nasional.

“If they adhere to their principles, they will continue to exert pressure on the government regarding the discharge,” said the Pendang MP in an interview with The Star.

He further added that failing to do so would contradict DAP’s struggle.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke had previously called on the Attorney General (AG) to provide an explanation for the factors leading to Ahmad Zahid’s DNAA, citing the importance of justice and accountability.

In response to the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision to grant a DNAA on the 47 charges against Ahmad Zahid, Loke acknowledged the critical views expressed by various parties and the public.

Similarly, Amanah, DAP’s partner in Pakatan Harapan, also demanded an explanation.

The Attorney General’s Chambers confirmed that the arguments presented by the prosecution in favor of DNAA were accepted by the court. The High Court judge acknowledged the cogency of the prosecution’s arguments in a brief two-paragraph statement.

Last Monday, the High Court granted the Deputy Prime Minister a DNAA for the 47 graft charges brought against him by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with the alleged misappropriation of funds linked to his charitable foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi.

The prosecution sought Ahmad Zahid’s discharge instead of acquittal to allow for further investigations in the case. Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar listed 11 reasons for this decision, including ensuring the prevention of any miscarriage of justice and enabling a more comprehensive investigation by the authorities.

Meanwhile, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki revealed that graft investigators were pursuing new leads in the Yayasan Akalbudi case involving Ahmad Zahid. However, he declined to provide additional details about the ongoing investigation.
