JOHOR BARU: Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed has stated that if DAP wants the support of Malays through cooperation with Umno, they will need to make significant changes. In order to convince Malays that DAP has changed from its previous stance, Nur Jazlan believes that DAP must be willing to drop the Secular Nation agenda and the Malaysia Malaysian slogan from its party constitution. He expressed these views in a Facebook post on Thursday (Aug 31).
Nur Jazlan questioned whether DAP would be willing to make such a significant sacrifice for their political survival. He warned that if DAP remains hesitant to make major changes like Umno, it would continue to be isolated by Malay voters, while Umno would continue to be rejected as long as it works with DAP.
Nur Jazlan also mentioned that Malay support for PAS will be stronger in GE16 (the 16th General Election) and beyond. He suggested that this could lead to a situation where the Chinese continue to support DAP, while the Malays switch their support to PAS.
Nur Jazlan affirmed that Malays currently have two options – either to completely switch their support to PAS or to accept Umno as their vehicle of struggle. He also said that all parties, including DAP, need to help restore Umno as the main party in the country, as it was before 2018.
According to Nur Jazlan, in the current political landscape, it is not only Umno that needs to change, but all parties in the unity government coalition must also change if they want to be accepted by Malays. He cited conversations with Malay voters who expressed their difficulty in accepting DAP’s way of politics and explained that they consider MCA in Barisan Nasional acceptable because MCA is not extreme and Umno is the dominant party in the coalition. Malays draw the line at accepting or supporting DAP, as they perceive the secular agenda to be against Islamic and Malay Shari’a.
Nur Jazlan stated that Umno has paid a significant price for working with Pakatan Harapan. He pointed out the various changes in Umno leadership, including a new president, deputy president, and new faces in the vice-president, Youth, and Wanita wings. Additionally, he highlighted that Umno has fielded many new and young candidates in recent state elections and the upcoming 15th General Election. The biggest sacrifice and change, according to Nur Jazlan, is Umno setting aside its principles by cooperating with DAP in the unity government to ensure the stability of the country after GE15.
Nur Jazlan mentioned that it has become tiring for the Umno leadership to continually explain the rational behind their move to the public, especially their grassroots.
