KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has announced that it will take immediate action to terminate the contract of any nominees or tenants of the People’s Housing Project (PPR) caught renting out their homes to foreigners. Ismadi Sakirin, DBKL’s chief executive of Socioeconomic Development, emphasized the seriousness of the matter, stating that the organization will not tolerate any registered tenant profiteering in such a way as it constitutes a breach of the rental agreement.
He further explained that the Housing and Local Government Ministry will assess the reasons given by the tenants; if those reasons are found to be unreasonable (such as renting to family, kin, or other Malaysian citizens) or if they are proven to be subletting to foreigners, DBKL will terminate the rental as a mandatory action. Ismadi stressed that this stance is non-negotiable due to the significantly low rental rates that DBKL provides. For instance, if DBKL imposes a rental rate of RM140, and the lessee rents it out for RM600 or RM800, it will result in disqualification.
The announcement was made after the launch of the Op Sri PA Taskforce at the Sri Sabah public housing flats on Thursday (Feb 22). The task force, launched by the Fire and Rescue Department, aims to conduct fire safety inspections of public housing in DBKL that are over 30 years old.
Ismadi elaborated on the termination of the contract, stating that this action will also apply to cases where the contract nominee or tenant of the PPR does not live in the house but allows their family members, such as parents and siblings, to occupy the unit, in contravention of the contract stipulation that only the nominees or tenants could live there. He noted that action will be taken if there is any report on this breach, wherein DBKL will conduct a review or assessment.
He also provided an example, stating that if a justification is provided claiming that they have to return to the village for a while and then allow the sister to stay there, DBKL will give them time to rectify their mistake. If they fail to do so within seven months, the contract will be terminated. – Bernama
