    In Kuala Lumpur, a delivery rider was sentenced to two weeks in jail for stealing prawns and squid from a public market in early January. The Magistrate’s Court handed down the sentence to Khamirul Azmi Basli, 35, after he admitted to stealing raw seafood worth RM350 from a trader at Datuk Keramat Market on January 9. He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine.

    The accused was also ordered to begin serving his jail sentence from the date of his arrest on January 22. Deputy public prosecutor Vivien Yeap Jie Xi requested a fair sentence as a lesson, while Khamirul Azmi, who was not represented by a lawyer, appealed for leniency. He admitted to stealing but claimed he did not do it to sell the items, but rather to eat them. He apologized and promised not to repeat his actions, also mentioning that his mother now lives alone at home.
