MELAKA: In Melaka, the number of dengue fever cases has increased slightly this year. From January 1 to July 8, there were 265 cases reported, which is four cases more than the same period last year, according to Ngwe Hee Sem, the Melaka health, human resources, and unity committee chairman. He also mentioned that, fortunately, there have been no deaths from dengue in the past two years.

During the week of July 2 to 8, there were 28 dengue cases recorded, compared to 15 cases during the same period in 2022. Two active dengue hotspots were identified: Taman Melaka Baru Section Two with four cases and Taman Kota Laksamana with two cases. Ngwe emphasized the need for continued vigilance in tackling these hotspots.

As for Covid-19, there were 70 new cases and one death reported during the same week. This shows a decline of 17.6% compared to the previous year when there were 85 cases. Ngwe also highlighted that no new clusters have emerged in Melaka up to July 8.

Overall, the authorities have been closely monitoring 1,242 cases of variants of concern and variants of interest during this period. While the Covid-19 situation is improving, it is essential to remain cautious and take the necessary precautions to prevent the further spread of the virus.
