Engaging with government agencies on marine life conservation is crucial for raising awareness and enhancing future cooperation, according to Zainudin Abd Wahab, the director of Johor Fisheries Department. He mentioned that a monthly session has been conducted with various agencies, private sector, and non-governmental organisations, aligning with the agenda. However, the sessions are temporarily suspended during the monsoon season from November to February. One of the major concerns faced by the department is pollution, which adversely affects water quality and harms marine life population. To tackle this issue, beach cleanup programmes are conducted in collaboration with agencies, private sector, and NGOs. Zainudin emphasized that if not managed properly, the reduction in marine life population would eventually impact the livelihood of fishermen in the future.

Zainudin highlighted that the department also organizes guided snorkelling programmes on popular tourist islands such as Pulau Harimau and Pulau Mentinggi. Additionally, there is a sharing session at the information centre in Pulau Tinggi, Mersing, followed by an island hopping programme and community engagement. The aim of these activities is to expose and share knowledge about conservation practices with a wide range of individuals and departments, ultimately inspiring them to protect marine life. Protection of areas with coral reefs and seaweed is particularly important as they play a vital role in supporting the entire marine ecosystem.

Zainudin further stated that the department is planning to expand its programmes next year with the assistance of the Johor and federal governments. The target is to organize at least 45 programmes annually in collaboration with agencies and NGOs. Moreover, the department aims to increase involvement and cooperation from the private sector, recognizing their important role in marine conservation efforts.
