KUCHING: Sarawak’s Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister, Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, has stated that the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) aligns with the state’s efforts in pursuing green energy and decarbonisation. He expressed his satisfaction that the roadmap recognizes Sarawak’s contribution to renewable energy and climate change mitigation through hydroelectric power, green hydrogen projects, and carbon capture.
Dr Hazland highlighted that Sarawak will continue to follow its post-Covid-19 development strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which outlines the state’s transition to becoming a developed society by 2030. He stated that the goals and framework outlined in the NETR are in line with the PCDS 2030 blueprint and are compatible with Sarawak’s objectives.
The NETR, launched by Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli in Kuala Lumpur, includes Phase 1 with 10 flagship catalytic initiatives that will open up investment opportunities ranging from RM435 billion to RM1.85 trillion by 2050.
The roadmap also aims to establish Sarawak as the hydrogen hub of the country and develop a framework for carbon capture and storage (CCS), with plans to implement catalyst projects within two years. Sarawak intends to utilize the CCS projects listed in the roadmap to unlock hydrocarbon reserves from its offshore fields in Kasawari and Lang Lebah.
In addition, Sarawak is actively discussing industrial CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) projects to decarbonize local industries and energy systems. The state was granted a license for carbon trading and CCUS in March this year, and Dr Hazland encouraged more projects to generate carbon credits for sale in domestic and international markets. The revenue from these carbon credit sales will help accelerate sustainable development projects within Sarawak.
Dr Hazland further emphasized that Sarawak is developing its own energy transition policy and integrated energy roadmap to achieve its objectives outlined in the PCDS 2030. The state welcomes collaborations in the clean energy sector and is eagerly awaiting the release of the NETR’s second phase later this year.
