SHAH ALAM: A police sergeant at the Sepang police headquarters has been apprehended for stealing materials from an exhibit storage, believed to be driven by desperation to obtain drugs and financial difficulties.

Comm Datuk Hussein Omar, the Selangor police chief, announced on Wednesday (Aug 2) that the 44-year-old suspect was arrested at 12.30pm on Monday at the Sepang police headquarters. Law enforcement authorities successfully recovered 272 evidence bags during the operation, containing 486g of heroin and syabu.

The suspect led the investigators to an area near his government quarters complex in Nilai, where he had disposed of the stolen items. However, the authorities are still in search of other evidence bags that have gone missing, as stated by Comm Hussein during a press conference at the state police headquarters.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect gained access to the administrative office where the exhibits were stored. However, he was unable to break into the secured storage area, which was filled with evidence from ongoing cases. The stolen evidence bags were located in the office, as they belonged to completed cases that were scheduled for disposal.

Comm Hussein added, “We are investigating whether the suspect had intentions of selling the stolen evidence.” He also mentioned that the suspect, who works as an assistant investigating officer at the Sepang Commercial Crime Investigation division, has been detained for further investigation. Despite serving in the police force for 21 years, the suspect has had disciplinary issues. Furthermore, at the time of the break-in, he was being removed from active duty after testing positive for syabu on July 14.
