JOHOR BARU: A man who is believed to be a senior leader of the deviant teaching group, Millah Abraham, has been detained in a special operation by the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ).

State Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said the man, who is in his 40s, was detained at his house in Batu Pahat last Wednesday (Aug 14).

“The suspect was arrested at around 7.15pm during a special operation carried out by the JAINJ enforcement team and Johor police to curb the deviant group teaching.

“Investigation on the group led to his arrest where the suspect claimed to be a ‘minister’ in the deviant group,” he said in a statement here on Friday (Aug 16).

Mohd Fared, who is also the Semerah assemblyman, added that the suspect was brought to Batu Pahat Syariah Lower Court on Thursday (Aug 15), where his trial date has been set for Sept 24.

Earlier this month, 14 followers of the deviant group, aged 22 to 67, were arrested in a series of raids held in Batu Pahat, Segamat, Muar and Pontian.

The suspects, 11 men and three women have been charged under Section 9 and Section 13(1)(b) of the Syariah Criminal Procedure Enactment (Johor) 2003.
