In Malaysia, Gobind Singh Deo has stated that the increasing digitalisation in the country is leading to the need for a Digital Ministry in order to address the challenges that come with it. As the new Digital Minister, Gobind pointed out that the current era has brought about significant changes in how society and businesses operate.
Having previously served as the Communications and Multimedia Minister, Gobind highlighted the wide scope of the ministry, which encompasses information, media, and digital matters. He emphasized that the challenges of the digital era have impacted various aspects of society, from everyday activities to business operations and the need to address digital threats.
During a press conference, Gobind emphasized the necessity of a separate ministry to tackle these challenges. He clarified that the responsibilities related to information and media would continue to be overseen by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Gobind also stated that immediate steps will be taken to study the scope of the Digital Ministry and establish a framework to define its roles. He stressed the importance of initiating short, medium, and long-term plans for the ministry and the need to start work on it promptly.
Regarding the specific agencies under the Digital Ministry, Gobind mentioned that he had not been provided with the details yet. He planned to discuss this with Fahmi on the following day to gain clarity on the agencies falling under his jurisdiction.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in announcing the Cabinet reshuffle, expressed the need to separate the Communications and Digital Ministry to meet the increasing demands of digital transformation. He underlined the importance of enhancing communications to effectively convey the government’s plans and programs to the people.
