JOHOR BARU: Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has stated that the Attorney General exercised his discretion in accordance with Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution when deciding to request a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Home Minister, who is also the Secretary-General of PKR, clarified that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should not be held accountable for this decision. Saifuddin emphasized that the Attorney General has the authority to determine whether to prosecute, proceed with a case, or withdraw it, as stated in the Article.
Saifuddin pointed out that it was former Attorney General Tommy Thomas who initially charged Ahmad Zahid and that the DNAA was granted by the current Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun. However, blame was unfairly assigned to Anwar Ibrahim. He expressed his disapproval of the claims and assumptions that hold the Prime Minister responsible for all actions of the Attorney General, as it implies that the Prime Minister has no other responsibilities.
The High Court recently approved a DNAA for Ahmad Zahid, relieving him of all 47 graft charges related to the Yayasan Akalbudi funds. Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah justified the extension of investigation time, stating that the defense’s representations required extensive examination by the prosecution, spanning hundreds of pages.
Regarding Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s announcement to reassess the party’s position in the unity government following Ahmad Zahid’s DNAA, Saifuddin commented that the party is entitled to do so. He acknowledged that Muda understands the consequences of their actions as a political party, and he refrained from further comment, respecting their right to make decisions based on their considerations.
In a press conference, Syed Saddiq stated that Ahmad Zahid’s DNAA has crossed a significant “red line.” He asserted that Muda will not hesitate to evaluate its position in the unity government.
