GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has warned all 40 newly-elected state assemblymen against stirring up racial politics or religious insensitivity in the state assembly. He emphasized the importance of acting and speaking based on facts and mature principles, and urged the representatives not to promote hatred or engage in racial politics and religious insensitivity while carrying out their duties. Chow stressed the need to set a positive example and work for the benefit of the people in Penang, as they have been given the mandate by the people.

Chow also highlighted the importance of maintaining harmony and unity in the state despite the different ideologies of the assemblymen. He believes that stability is crucial for the continued success of Penang, which has achieved significant progress over the past 15 years.

Sungai Dua assemblyman Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff, seated in the Opposition leader’s seat, mentioned that none of the 11 Opposition members have been appointed to the role yet. He stated that the decision on the candidate will be made by the Perikatan Nasional leadership before the next state assembly meeting in November. Muhammad Fauzi, who is Penang PAS commissioner, mentioned that both PAS and Bersatu have submitted names for consideration.

Azrul Mahathir Aziz, the newly appointed Deputy Speaker and Bayan Lepas assemblyman, expressed his expectation for rational and professional behavior during the assembly sittings. He hopes for tense debates but without provocation on sensitive topics that could lead to disharmony. Azrul believes that the assembly is the appropriate platform for raising issues and addressing matters.
