GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan president Dominic Lau has denied rumors that he was asked to leave a PAS ceramah in Sungai Dua.
An online portal had previously reported that Lau was asked to leave the ceramah as he had shown up without being invited.
Lau clarified that while Gerakan was indeed not invited to attend the ceramah, he was not asked to leave.
“I was there to see PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang but as the event ran late, I could not speak to him and left,” Lau explained.
“He (Abdul Hadi) asked to meet at 9pm, before the Sungai Dua ceramah started, but he ran late and arrived around 10.30pm.
“Since the ceramah had already begun, I could not speak with him,” he added when contacted on Wednesday (Aug 2).
Given that the ceramah was taking place on the mainland and Lau was contesting on the island, he had to return for a meeting.
“When we left the ceramah, it was almost 11pm,” Lau stated.
Lau further mentioned that although he did not have the opportunity to meet Abdul Hadi in person, they have since spoken afterwards.
“It is untrue that I was at any point asked to leave,” he emphasized.
Lau is currently contesting in the Bayan Lepas state seat under a Perikatan ticket, competing against incumbent Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz from Pakatan Harapan.
Previously, there were reports that the PAS grassroots were considering boycotting the upcoming election after Lau was named as a candidate in the Malay-majority Bayan Lepas state seat.
Local PAS leaders argued that the party had been active in the area for years and did not support Lau, whom they labeled as a “parachute” candidate.
However, Lau received support from Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, who showed up to express his support during the nomination day on July 29th.
