KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Dominic Lau and his team, deputy president Oh Tong Keong, and all three incumbent vice-present have successfully retained their posts. This victory comes after the party elections in which Lau defended the Gerakan president’s post, fending off three other challengers.
In a heated race for the top party post, Lau emerged as the winner, defeating former vice-president Gan Peng Lam, former secretary-general Liang Teck Meng, and federal territories Gerakan chairman Lau Hoi Keong. Lau’s remarkable achievement secured him 429 out of 1,130 votes cast, putting him ahead of his competitors: Lau Hoi Keong (335 votes), Liang Teck Meng (275 votes), and Gan Peng Lam (76 votes).
The three vice-presidents who successfully retained their positions are Baljit Singh, Koo Shiaw Lee, and Alexander Lo Su Hyen.
In other election results, Wong Chia Zhen won the Youth chief position, while Chung Mon Sie emerged victorious in the Women’s wing.
Expressing gratitude towards party members, Lau thanked them for their continued support and expressed his hope for unity. Speaking at a press conference after the results were announced, he stated, “I hope that after the party elections, all of us can be united, and next, we have to face the state elections.”
Furthermore, Lau emphasized his belief that the new leadership could play a vital role in assisting Perikatan Nasional in winning the state elections. Gerakan aims to secure seats in the upcoming state election, in a bid to regain its position since GE14, where it failed to win any.
“The new leadership will be fully prepared for the 16th national election,” Lau added, expressing his determination to face future challenges.
In another success story, Oh Tong Keong successfully fended off challenges from party secretary-general Mak Kah Keong, deputy speaker V Prabagaran, and Bayan Baru Gerakan chief Kiew Hen Chong.
Dominic Lau assumed the role of Gerakan president in November 2018, following the party’s failure to win any seats in the general election that year. Since then, he has led Gerakan to join Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional coalition in 2021. However, the party has not been successful in securing any seats in the 2022 general election or in any previous state elections.
