KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated that it is unfair for politicians to involve the Malay Rulers in political matters. He added that leaders of Perikatan Nasional should acknowledge this fact and not blame the unity government when they are summoned by the police to provide statements. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar explained that he had made it clear to the police that they should not utilize the Sedition Act to target individuals who criticize the government or himself as the Prime Minister. However, when it comes to discussions concerning the Rulers, it is a different situation as the Rulers have expressed their preference to not be part of political debates. Anwar further emphasized that the Rulers are unable to respond in Parliament, the media, or any other platform. He reiterated that while people are allowed to express their opinions regarding the government and himself, they should refrain from involving race, religion, and royalty.
During the recent six-state elections in July, Perikatan leaders accused the unity government of applying double standards by employing the Sedition Act against Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for his alleged derogatory comments towards the Sultan of Selangor.
