Transport Minister Anthony Loke has issued a warning to motorists in Balik Pulau to refrain from engaging in illegal racing activities. He emphasized the potential harm and danger these activities pose not only to the participants and their families, but also to other road users. Loke highlighted the recent incidents of illegal racing in Penang and acknowledged the need to address this issue for the safety of everyone involved.

This statement was made during a ceremony held at a driving school in Balik Pulau, where new motorcycle licence recipients were recognized under the MyLesen B2 national programme for motorcyclists. Loke specifically addressed the issue of unlicensed youths riding motorcycles, pointing out that this behavior is particularly concerning as it lacks proper training and puts them at a higher risk of accidents.

He explained that the MyLesen B2 programme was initiated by the government to assist the B40 community, who may face financial constraints in obtaining a licence. By providing professional training through this programme, the aim is to promote competency among riders and reduce the number of accidents, particularly those involving teenage riders. Loke also raised alarm over the constant occurrence of illegal racing activities, including in Penang, and expressed hope that the programme would contribute to curbing such events.

The MyLesen B2 programme, which falls under the 2023 Budget, is an effort by the Transport Ministry, in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), to support the B40 group in obtaining a Class B2 licence. With an allocation of RM2.7 million, this programme is expected to benefit around 9,000 candidates from the B40 community. Loke expressed his aspiration to increase the number of recipients in the coming year, aiming for double the amount of funding and participants.

He stressed that the programme, which provides a RM300 contribution towards the course, is being implemented nationwide and has already received a significant number of applications. The Transport Minister’s warning serves as a reminder to all motorists in Balik Pulau to prioritize road safety and avoid engaging in illegal racing. The MyLesen B2 programme is an essential step towards ensuring that motorcycle riders receive proper training and obtain the necessary licences, contributing to a safer road environment for everyone.
