Two men have been sentenced to the gallows by the High Court in Sibu on Monday (July 31) for robbing and murdering a senior citizen in order to obtain money to buy drugs.
Jeeji Ting Kim Leong, 32, and Syahadan Othman Sabang, 29, were found guilty under Section 302 of the Penal Code read together with section 34 of the same code.
The murder occurred between 1am and 7.10pm on June 27, 2018, at an unnumbered house in Pulau Kerto. The victim, Ting Poh Sing, 63, was killed with the intention of committing robbery.
Justice Datuk Christopher Chin Soo Yin stated that the prosecution had successfully proven, without reasonable doubt, that the attack on the victim was planned and premeditated.
The victim was bound by her hands and legs and subsequently strangled to death.
Justice Chin added that her death was neither accidental nor the result of negligence.
“There are no doubts in my mind regarding the evidence presented by the forensic pathologist,” he said.
“The two accused individuals are habitual drug users and had a clear motive to rob the victim in order to support their drug addiction.
“In fact, there was undisputed evidence that the upper portion of the victim’s house was being used by the two accused individuals and others as a drug den,” he added.
“In accordance with Section 277 of the Criminal Procedure Code, you will be taken to a designated location at a later time, where you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead,” he concluded.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Mark Kenneth Netto. Ting was represented by Yap Hoi Liong and Ben Lau Le Bin, while Syahadan was represented by Jacob Wong.
