KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has turned the tables on those who questioned his attendance at Jacky Cheung’s concert on polling day for the six state elections.

The MCA president said he did not abandon Barisan Nasional for the Hong Kong singer.

“The concert was held at 8pm on Saturday (Aug 12). Voting ended two hours before that.

“Furthermore, all campaigning had to stop by 11.59pm on Aug 11. This was set by the Election Commission. (Otherwise) we would violate the law,” he said in a video on social media Thursday (Aug 17).

On Saturday, the Ayer Hitam MP was spotted at Cheung’s concert at Axiata Arena here.

A video clip that showed him walking to his seat with a woman was shared on social media, with commenters saying he had put Cheung before the elections.

There were also questions raised about the identity of the woman, whom he jokingly referred to as his “ex-girlfriend”.

“She is not my girlfriend, she is my ex-girlfriend,” he said.

Asked if his wife was all right with that, he said: “You can send this photo to my wife and tell her ‘Wee Ka Siong’s ex-girlfriend is very pretty.’ She will definitely be very happy.”

The woman was actually Dr Wee’s wife, Datin Seri Jessica Lim.

To another question that he seemed to be quite free during the two-week campaign period, Dr Wee showed a series of photographs of his hectic rounds.

Dr Wee had visited Rantau, Lenggeng, Jelebu, Gemas and Gemencheh in Negri Sembilan; Selat Klang, Kuang and Dusun Tua in Selangor; as well as Bertam in Penang, among other constituencies.

He ended the video by singing two lines of Cheung’s Mandarin song “Yi lu shang you ni” (Having You Along the Way).
