Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong believes that the incentives and aid for the B40 community, introduced by the previous Barisan Nasional administration before 2018, should be maintained.
He emphasized the importance of alleviating the financial burden on those in the lower-income group.
The MCA president acknowledged the past effectiveness of financial aid programs such as the 1Malaysia People’s Aid and the 1Malaysia Book Vouchers and Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia in assisting the people.
He also highlighted the positive impact of the 1Malaysia Clinics program, which only charges RM1 for general medical services.
“We had a successful beginning and now we need to enhance these efforts,” said Dr Wee in a Facebook post on Friday (July 21), adding that the country’s economy must be improved to support these measures.
Dr Wee, who is also Ayer Hitam MP, emphasized the need to empower the M40 community, which consists of experts in various fields, by providing them with knowledge and income opportunities.
He suggested that infrastructure projects like the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) could be a focus, as these projects have already produced thousands of engineers.
“These engineers are part of the M40 group and have secure jobs. Their expertise is recognized internationally,” he said.
Dr Wee praised the impressive achievements of infrastructure projects like the MRT and the 665km-long ECRL, as they not only create job opportunities but also position Malaysia as a potential service provider.
In terms of the T20 group, Dr Wee emphasized the importance of attracting foreign direct investment, including from Chinese automobile manufacturer Geely.
“In the past, there were concerns about ‘selling’ our child, Proton, but after several years, the move has proven successful with Proton now profitable. I have witnessed its progress from day one,” he said.
“Proton cars are being widely sold, which is the outcome we desired after laying the foundations long ago. We should continue to build on this success,” added Dr Wee, also awaiting the outcome of Geely’s RM45 billion investment as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
