KOTA KINABALU: A drug dealer attempted to evade arrest by driving into oncoming traffic while being pursued by the police in Sabah’s Tawau district on the east coast. The incident occurred on Wednesday (Sept 6) when the 30-year-old local suspect, who was in possession of over 2kg of syabu, approached a police roadblock at Jalan Timur, Sin Onn. Panicking, he abruptly turned his car around, prompting the police on duty to give chase.
However, the suspect did not manage to get far as the police intercepted and apprehended him shortly afterwards. A subsequent search of his vehicle revealed six plastic packets, including two Chinese tea packets, containing a total of 2,162.40g of syabu. Tawau police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin disclosed these details during a press conference on Friday (Sept 8). He further revealed that the suspect was unemployed and had a prior criminal conviction related to drugs in 2016.
According to ACP Jasmin, the seized syabu was estimated to be worth approximately RM120,000. The suspect was remanded for seven days starting from Thursday (Sept 7) in order to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. ACP Jasmin also stated that the police are actively tracking the syndicate involved and believe the drugs were intended to be sold in Tawau and its neighboring areas.
With this in mind, ACP Jasmin urged the public to collaborate with the authorities to combat the drug problem in the district.
