KUALA LUMPUR: Four individuals have been arrested and RM520,000 worth of methamphetamine has been seized in a series of raids in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (Aug 23), as police dismantle a drug syndicate led by a Thai woman.
According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid, the suspects aged between 23 and 30 were apprehended between 7pm and 9.15pm. The syndicate is believed to have been active for two months, using vehicles as a means of storing drugs before distributing them to buyers.
“In the first raid, a Thai couple who both work in restaurants and a local man employed at a horse farm in Selangor were arrested by the roadside of Taman Permata, Cheras. Although the suspects have no criminal record, they tested positive for drugs,” said Allaudeen in a statement released on Friday.
As a result of the arrest, the police discovered 15 packets of methamphetamine weighing 16 kilograms in a car park at Solaris Dutamas. Shortly after, they arrested another suspect, a Thai woman believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate, in the lobby of a residence in Taman Kobena, Cheras.
Initial investigations have revealed that the seized drugs could cater to 30,000 drug users. In addition, a vehicle estimated to be worth RM20,000 was confiscated during the operation.
Allaudeen stated that the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) of the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters is currently conducting an investigation to trace the source of the drug supply.
All the suspects have been remanded for seven days until August 24, and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
In the meantime, Allaudeen urged the public to report any information related to drug activities to the JSJN hotline at 012-208 7222. – Bernama
