The incident occurred on July 8 at Kampung Teluk Tempoyak in Batu Maung, where the fishermen and bus driver allegedly hit the dog in a drain. The accused were charged under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, which carries a penalty of up to three years in jail, a fine of up to RM100,000, or both upon conviction. The charge was read with Section 34 of the Penal Code for a criminal act committed by several persons with a common intention. Bail was set at RM1,000 for each accused, and they were ordered to report to the nearest police station on the first of every month until the case is resolved. DPP Lim Jin Hong served as the prosecutor, and the case mention is scheduled for August 16.
The incident gained attention after a video was posted on Twitter, showing the brutal act. The dog, a black mongrel, was allegedly hit by a motorcycle and subsequently bludgeoned to death. The video displayed two men using a wooden club and a long staff to mercilessly beat and stab the helpless animal. The sound of the dog’s weak and pained growls can be heard in the initial strikes, but the cries fade as the subsequent blows land. According to the person who posted the video, the dog was injured and crawled towards a nearby drain before being dragged out and beaten until its death. In one of the clips, a man can be heard loudly urging others not to record the incident.
This shocking act of animal cruelty has sparked outrage among netizens and animal welfare advocates. The incident is a stark reminder of the importance of upholding animal welfare laws and ensuring the punishment of those who commit such heinous acts. Public awareness and education play a crucial role in preventing similar incidents in the future.
Cases like these should serve as a wake-up call to society, urging us to treat animals with kindness and compassion. Animals deserve to be protected from harm and cruelty, and it is our responsibility as individuals to speak out against such acts and demand justice for the innocent lives that are lost. The legal proceedings against Rosli Mat Zin and Suhaili Haron will continue, and their fate will be determined by the court system. Let us hope that this case sets a precedent and sends a strong message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. Together, we can strive towards a more compassionate and empathetic society, where all creatures are treated with the respect and care they deserve.
