Unity government parties are confident in their ability to retain Penang, Negeri Sembilan, and Selangor in the upcoming state elections on August 12, according to PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli (pic). He believes that these parties will receive more votes in these traditionally Pakatan Harapan stronghold states, now that they have the support of Barisan Nasional backers.
“And that is why I see no issues in Penang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan. My view is that the Malay votes in these three states will surpass the numbers needed for us to retain them,” Rafizi said. He added that there has been a shift of support in Kedah and Kelantan, but due to the sizable Malay-vote base of Perikatan Nasional (PN), it remains to be seen.
The Economy Minister noted that Perikatan Nasional is only leading the race in Terengganu. Rafizi addressed the apparent shift of support from Malay voters to unity government parties in Penang, wherein the support increased from 30-31% to 42% last week. He believes that most of the undecided voters are looking for a political party that offers viable solutions and competent leaders, which Pakatan and Barisan can provide.
Regarding Perikatan’s advantage, Rafizi stated that their politicians tend to “joke around” during campaigns to attract voters. Despite that, he is confident that the unity government parties will retain Penang. However, he emphasized the need to reach out to all voter bases, especially the non-Malays.
