KUANTAN: The Election Commission (EC) has received a notice of vacancy in the Pahang state assembly following the death of Pelangai assemblyman Datuk Seri Johari Harun in an air crash last week. State assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin handed the notice to Pahang EC director Datuk Zamree Hamli. Zamree stated that a meeting to discuss the vacancy would likely take place within the week.
Mohd Sharkar also mentioned that as of May 2023, there were 16,475 registered voters in Pelangai. Johari won the Pelangai state seat with a 4,048-vote majority, defeating Perikatan Nasional’s Kasim Samad (3,260 votes), Pakatan’s Ahmed Wafiuddin Shamsuri (2,031 votes), and Isa Ahmad from Pejuang (65 votes) in the 15th General Election.
Johari, 53, was one of the 10 individuals who lost their lives in the plane crash incident on August 17 in Elmina, Shah Alam, Selangor. He was a first-term assemblyman who also held the position of state local government, housing, environment, and green technology committee chairman.
Deputy Speaker Lee Chin Chen and state secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Yaacob were also present during the handover.
