KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) has announced that it will convene a special meeting on Tuesday, July 18, to discuss important dates related to the upcoming Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election. This follows the receipt of the Election Judge’s Report, as stipulated by the Election Offences Act 1954, which highlighted the court’s decision to nullify the election of the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency held on November 19 last year.
EC Secretary, Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak, expressed that the meeting, chaired by EC Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, will cover various matters regarding the by-election, including the date of the election writ, candidate nomination day, polling day, the voter register to be utilized, and other logistical preparations. A post-meeting press conference has also been scheduled for updates and announcements regarding the by-election.
The Terengganu Election Court recently declared the victory of PAS candidate Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim in the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency during the 15th general election as null and void. This decision, rendered by Judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril, came after the successful submission of evidence by the petitioner, Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong, who proved that corruption had occurred in an attempt to influence voters during GE15.
Despite the petitioner not being called as a witness, Judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril found the presented evidence compelling enough to invoke Section 36 of the Election Offences Act, thus declaring the election in Kuala Terengganu as invalid. In the previous GE15, Ahmad Amzad secured a majority of 40,907 votes, defeating three other challengers, including Mohd Zubir, to emerge as the winner of the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat.
For more updates and details on the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election, stay tuned for the press conference following the special meeting of the Election Commission on Tuesday, July 18. – Bernama
