The Election Commission (EC) has been informed of a vacant seat in the Jepak state seat in Sarawak after the death of assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip on Sept 15.
In a statement on Tuesday (Sept 19), EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak stated that the official notification of the vacancy was received from Sarawak Speaker Datuk Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasir.
Ikmalrudin also mentioned that the EC will convene a special meeting on Monday (Sept 25) to determine important dates for the Jepak by-election, such as nomination day and polling day.
“In accordance with Article 21(5) of the Sarawak state Constitution, the vacancy must be filled within 60 days from the date the seat was deemed vacant,” stated Ikmalrudin in the press release.
Talib, 72, passed away on Sept 15.
Talib, a member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, was re-elected as Jepak assemblyman for a sixth term in the 2021 Sarawak Election.
He was first elected in 1996 when the constituency was established.
Talib served as Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) from 2017 to 2021.
