KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) has yet to receive official notification regarding the vacancy of the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat, according to Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak, the secretary of the EC. When asked if the EC had received a notice from the court regarding the seat’s vacancy, he stated, “We haven’t received anything officially yet.” On June 27, the Terengganu Election Court invalidated the victory of Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim, the Member of Parliament for Kuala Terengganu representing PAS in the 15th General Election (GE15).
Judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril, in his ruling, stated that corruption had taken place with the intention of influencing voters in GE15, as Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong had successfully proven when he filed an election petition to challenge Ahmad Amzad’s victory. Yesterday, lawyer Wan Rohimi Wan Daud, representing Ahmad Amzad, announced that PAS will not appeal against the outcome of the election petition for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat, which means a by-election will be conducted.
In the GE15, Ahmad Amzad secured the Kuala Terengganu seat with a significant majority of 40,907 votes, defeating three other challengers, including Mohd Zubir.
