The Education Ministry has directed schools to carry out risk assessments to ensure the safety of their infrastructure and facilities, in order to prevent any unfortunate incidents. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stressed the importance of schools taking precautionary measures to ensure student safety.
Fadhlina also mentioned that the ministry is closely monitoring the risk assessments in order to ensure that schools, including their infrastructure and facilities, are in excellent condition and safe to use. The ministry has allocated RM70,000 to each school for the purpose of upgrading and maintaining their facilities, making this directive timely and relevant.
Speaking at the Penang KV Insani Masyarakat Madani programme launch, Fadhlina addressed the issue of safety and risk assessments, emphasizing that buildings and school premises must be given necessary intervention measures to maintain their safety, thus ensuring schools remain a secure place for students.
The Education Minister’s comments were in response to the Perak government’s call for schools in the state to carry out risk assessments following an incident where a Year Three student was injured by a falling toilet cistern in an Ipoh school.
Fadhlina also commented on the tragic death of a secondary student who fell from a school building in Durian Daun, Melaka. She stressed the importance of all parties playing their role in ensuring student safety, not just in preventing bullying but also in regularly checking the condition of the school’s infrastructure.
“It is crucial to take preventive measures, not only against bullying but also regarding the school’s infrastructure,” stated Fadhlina. – Bernama
