In an effort to combat school dropout rates among students in rural areas, the Education Ministry in Malaysia is planning to increase the number of Comprehensive Special Model School 9 (K9) and Comprehensive Special Model School 11 (K11) this year. Deputy Minister Wong Kah Woh announced that the proposal includes expanding four K9 schools and two K11 schools.

The four K9 schools identified for expansion are SK Keruak in Besut, SK Merang in Setiu, SK Pulau Redang in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, and SK Nanga Merit in Limbang, Sarawak. As for K11 schools, the plan involves expanding SMK Betau in Lipis, Pahang, and SMK Long Bedian in Baram, Sarawak.

Explaining the concept, Wong mentioned that K9 schools provide nine years of education for students, covering from Standard One to Form Three. By expanding K9 schools, they will transition into K11 schools where students can receive more comprehensive education until Form Five.

Regarding the dropout rates, Wong highlighted that the primary school dropout rate decreased from 0.29% in 2017 to 0.06% last year. Similarly, the secondary school dropout rate also saw a decline from 1.36% in 2017 to 0.83% in the previous year.

Discussing the positive impact of the K9 and K11 schools expansion, Wong emphasized that providing a conducive learning environment for students in rural areas is crucial for reducing dropout rates. With a more structured and comprehensive education system in place, students are more likely to stay in school and complete their studies.

Addressing the importance of education in empowering individuals and communities, Wong underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their geographical location. By investing in initiatives like K9 and K11 schools, the Ministry aims to create a supportive education system that caters to the diverse needs of students.

Through continuous efforts to improve educational facilities and programs, the Education Ministry aims to create a more inclusive and equitable education system that provides every student with the necessary support to succeed. By expanding the reach of K9 and K11 schools, more students in rural areas will have access to quality education and a brighter future.

As the government works towards achieving its goal of reducing school dropout rates and ensuring educational equity, initiatives like the expansion of K9 and K11 schools play a crucial role in providing students with the tools they need to thrive academically and beyond.

By strengthening the education system and fostering a culture of lifelong learning, Malaysia is taking significant steps towards building a more educated and empowered society for the benefit of current and future generations.
