KUALA LUMPUR: Eight people who were arrested for allegedly demonstrating against the mistreatment of the LGBT community at a local shopping mall have been released on bail.

The City police chief, Comm Datuk Shuhaily Mohd Zain, stated that the eight individuals, aged between 18 and 56, were apprehended on Saturday (July 29).

“We were first alerted to the situation by reports of a gathering at the mall involving placards and chants,” he shared with reporters on Monday (July 31).

“Some of the posters displayed stated that being LGBT is not a crime,” he added.

In response to inquiries regarding the group’s affiliation, he revealed that the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department is currently conducting investigations.

Malay news portal Majoriti recently published an article about a gathering outside a local shopping mall, where it was claimed that individuals were demonstrating in support of the LGBT community.

The article also mentioned the existence of a video that was uploaded on Twitter, alleging that the protest took place on the same day as the nomination process for six state elections.

The video briefly shows a group of people holding signs demanding equal rights and an end to discrimination against the LGBT community.
