JASIN: A shocking incident unfolded at the Magistrate’s Court in Jasin, as an elderly man admitted to two charges of fatally shooting five cows. The accused, Midon Lambak, 79, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mohd Firdaus Saleh on Wednesday (July 12). However, the court postponed the sentencing to allow the prosecutor to produce the weapon used in the shooting — a 12 Beretta A303 semi-auto shotgun.
The incident occurred at 7.30am on April 15, at an oil palm plantation in Felda Bukit Senggeh, Nyalas, Asahan, Jasin district. Midon allegedly used the shotgun to shoot the animals, leading to their demise. The charges filed against him are serious, as he is liable under Section 39 of the Firearms Act 1960, which carries a maximum punishment of one year’s imprisonment, a fine of RM2,000, or both if found guilty.
Additionally, Midon faces another charge under Section 428 of the Penal Code for mischief by killing or maiming animals. This offense is punishable by a maximum prison sentence of three years, a fine, or both. Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanis Aliah Ahmad Kamarulnajuib represented the prosecution, while Midon was unrepresented in court.
To secure his temporary release, the court granted Midon bail in the amount of RM6,000 for both charges. The sentencing will take place on July 17. Reports suggest that Midon resorted to shooting the cows because he was frustrated with the cattle owner for allowing the animals to trespass onto his plantation.
