MELAKA: Employers within the Ayer Keroh Industrial Park have been given one year to ensure their migrant workers are provided conducive living quarters, says Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

The Melaka Chief Minister said the state government wants to do away with temporary labour quarters and promote safer, cleaner and systematic hostel concepts for foreign workers.

“We will give the employers until next year to comply with the workers’ minimum standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990,” he said after opening the pioneer centralised labour quarters (CLQ) with high-quality facilities known as “I-Asrama Ecopark Hostel” at the Ayer Keroh Industrial Park here on Monday (June 10).

The hostel with 272 units was constructed by PDG Property Group and received its Certificate of Completion and Compliance on June 7.

Ab Rauf said employers were given until April of this year to move foreign workers to CLQ but extended the deadline to next year.

Ab Rauf said the state government is targeting 40 more CLQ throughout the state.

Based on latest data, Melaka has some 60,000 migrant workers and the state Labour Department targets 40,000 of these foreigners to be shifted to CLQ by next year.
