NILAI: Manipal International University (MIU) has been selected as the official venue for the Energy Transition and Environmental Sustainability seminar, organized by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), which serves as the state-level launch for Negri Sembilan.

In order to drive energy saving and sustainable change, education and awareness have a crucial role to play. Educating oneself and communities about the significance of sustainability for the environment can inspire others to take similar action. Simple changes in daily life, such as reducing the use of single-use plastics, conserving water and electricity, and adopting eco-friendly transportation options, can collectively have a substantial impact.

The main objective of this initiative is to foster a culture of saving among educators and parents by supporting and strengthening energy-saving policies, as well as other environmental conservation efforts. In addition, it aims to educate organizations about the importance of implementing a sustainable energy management system, which involves measures to reduce energy consumption through efficient practices, maintenance, and the use of energy-efficient equipment on campus.

Dr Roslan Hussin, the director of Negri Sembilan Education Department, expressed concerns about environmental issues and emphasized the need to explore renewable energy as a solution. He also highlighted the collaborative efforts of various parties involved in the seminar, aiming to raise awareness in the community.

Dr. Roslan added, “We hope that programs like this will receive the necessary support, and we are grateful to TNB for addressing this environmental issue from the outset, with an eye towards a prosperous future.”

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Jason Fitzsimmons, the vice chancellor of MIU, recognizes the opportunity to educate and engage staff and students in this initiative by implementing the necessary steps on campus. Prof. Fitzsimmons stated, “Small changes in our daily lives, such as reducing single-use plastics, conserving water and electricity, and adopting eco-friendly transportation options, can collectively have a significant impact. MIU aims to become an organization that promotes efficient energy use and practices good conservation.”

The seminar was attended by approximately 250 students from schools in Negri Sembilan and was inaugurated by Dr. Roslan, accompanied by Abdul Manan Abdul Rahman, TNB Negri Sembilan state retail head, Mohd Kameel Abdul Karim, PIBKS Negeri Sembilan chairman, and Prof. Fitzsimmons.

Following the seminar, students conducted exhibitions showcasing their STEM projects. The collaboration between PIBKS STEM innovation laboratory, MIU, and Everbest Media hopes to encourage practices that address the challenges related to energy transition and environmental sustainability.
