THE cordial relations between Malaysia and Egypt was all evident during the National Day reception of the Arab nation in Kuala Lumpur.

The special guest at the event held at a hotel here was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

In his remarks, Egyptian Ambassador to Malaysia Ragai Tawfik Said Nasr said there had been significant developments on the bilateral front this year.

He cited the video call between Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier this year as one of the highlights.

“This was followed by a written invitation from the president to the prime minister to pay an official visit to Egypt at an appropriate time,” he added.

Nasr said the number of Malaysian students studying in Egyptian universities was over 7,000 currently.

“Our bilateral trade has increased to about US1.5bil (RM6.75bil). The coming months will witness some bilateral visits at various levels.

“Egypt considers Malaysia as an important nation in Asean and we are looking forward to enhancing our bilateral relations on all facets,” he added.

Among the guests at the event was Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
